The account
The explosion stopped the battle, both fleets simply stared. When the smoke cleared, the gold of three centuries of crusader knights lay scattered across an Egyptian bay. Divers have raised coins and cannon; the treasury's heart has never been tallied.
Leads, where the trail points now
- Where the trail goes cold: Napoleon stripped Malta's vaults in June 1798; eight weeks later his flagship blew apart at the Battle of the Nile with the plunder aboard. That is where any serious search begins.
- What you are chasing is The looted gold of the Knights of Malta. Work the documented record of L'Orient & the Treasure of Malta back to primary sources and separate what is attested from folklore.
- An Egyptian underwater-antiquities zone, excavation by permit only.
