The account
Gold was found in Finnish Lapland in 1868, and the far-north diggings never quite closed. At Tankavaara, above the Arctic Circle, the Gold Museum keeps the story and the village keeps the claim: pan outdoors under the midnight sun or indoors through the polar night, and everything that settles in your pan goes home with you. The national panning championships are fought here. Seriously.
Leads, where the trail points now
- What you can keep: Arctic gold, yours to keep, every flake. Confirm the site's current rules and any day fee before you go.
- Where: Sodankylä, Finnish Lapland. Open to all, equipment provided, all finds kept; outdoor season from June, indoor panning year-round.
- Best practice: record anything notable, leave the ground as you found it, and check the latest access notices before you travel.
