The account
Two sealed rooms at Begram held Roman glass, Indian ivories, and Chinese lacquer, the merged riches of the Silk Road; hidden through Afghanistan's wars, the hoard survived.
How it was found
- French archaeologists in the 1930s broke into two rooms at Begram that had been sealed and walled up for nearly 2,000 years, and found them stacked with Roman glass, Indian ivories, and Chinese lacquer, the merged luxuries of the Silk Road.
