The account
Diggers laying a house foundation at a brass works in 1913 struck gold a metre down: 81 Bronze Age objects, bowls and arm-spirals, two and a half kilos of it, the finest prehistoric gold ever found in Germany. The Red Army carried it to Moscow in 1945, and there it has stayed, a recovered treasure now itself lost behind a museum's locked doors, claimed by two nations.
How it was found
- Found in Germany in 1913, a hoard of Bronze Age gold vessels; taken to the Soviet Union after the war and, like Priam's gold, still held in Moscow.
