The account
One afternoon in 2014 a detectorist named Derek McLennan got a signal in a Galloway field and uncovered the richest Viking hoard ever found in Scotland, silver arm-rings, a gold bird-pin, a lidded vessel wrapped in cloth and packed with treasures from three continents. A thousand years buried, found by one man and a coil on an ordinary day.
How it was found
- Metal detectorist Derek McLennan found it on Church of Scotland land in 2014, the richest Viking-age hoard ever dug in Britain or Ireland, complete with a lidded vessel still wrapped in textile.
