The account
Cambyses II sent fifty thousand men across the Egyptian desert to burn the oracle at Siwa. A sandstorm rose, Herodotus wrote, and the army was never seen again, gear, bones, and all. Searchers have combed the dunes for centuries; a few claim scatters of remains, scholars dispute every one. The greatest vanishing in military history is still, mostly, a desert.
