The account
When Sophia Palaiologina rode north to marry a Moscow grand duke, she is said to have carried the rescued libraries of Constantinople in her dowry, and her grandson, Ivan the Terrible, swelled them with agents sent across Europe for rare folios. Then he died, and the whole collection vanished. Generations have tunnelled under the Kremlin hunting the walled-up vault. No one has proven it ever existed, which is exactly what keeps them digging.
