The account
As the Reich collapsed, the last reserves of the Reichsbank, 730 bars of gold, sacks of cash, sealed boxes of platinum and stones, were trucked into the Bavarian mountains and buried on a hillside above Einsiedl. American troops overran the area within days, and the treasure was gone. Some surfaced; most never has. It is the heist that inspired the films, still unsolved in the alpine soil.
