The account

In 1615, the story runs, a Spanish pearler named Iturbe rode a tidal bore up the Gulf of California into a vanishing inland sea, gathered a fortune in black pearls, and found the water gone behind him. He walked out; the ship he left has been swallowed by the desert that became the Salton basin. Prospectors, railroad men, and Pegleg Smith all swore they glimpsed her ribs in the dunes.
