The account

In 1615, the story runs, a Spanish pearler named Iturbe rode a tidal bore up the Gulf of California into a vanishing inland sea, gathered a fortune in black pearls, and found the water gone behind him. He walked out; the ship he left has been swallowed by the desert that became the Salton basin. Prospectors, railroad men, and Pegleg Smith all swore they glimpsed her ribs in the dunes. The sand keeps moving them.
