The account
A shepherd boy near Poltava put his foot through the ground in 1912 and fell, the tale runs, into a hoard of gold and silver, vessels, weapons, and rings of the Migration Period, believed to be the burial treasure of Kubrat, the founding khan of Old Great Bulgaria. Seal-rings bearing his name turned a field accident into a lost king's grave.
How it was found
- A shepherd boy near Poltava in 1912 stepped on gold poking out of the ground, which unspooled into a vast early-medieval hoard tied to a steppe khan.
