The account
A deeper-than-usual plough in 1978 shattered a buried kiln and flung gold across a Bulgarian field, over 170 pieces of tenth-century jewellery, set with emeralds, sapphires, and pearls, some of it made in Constantinople itself. A Byzantine-Bulgarian fortune, hidden at the height of an empire and turned up by a tractor a thousand years on.

- Found in 1978 in a vineyard near the old Bulgarian capital of Preslav, a Byzantine gold treasure of a 10th-century noblewoman, jewelry and a medallion.
