The account
A German mine sank the liner Niagara off New Zealand in 1940 with eight tons of gold aboard; divers in a daring salvage raised most of it, but a few bars are still down there.
How it was found
- After a mine sank the Niagara off New Zealand in 1940 with eight tons of gold, divers ran a daring 1941 salvage in a cramped diving bell at 121 meters and brought up nearly all of it, a wartime feat. A few bars are still down there.
