The account
A farmer let archaeologists sweep his field with detectors, and the machine screamed: under the floor of a vanished Viking outbuilding lay 67 kilograms of silver, over 14,000 coins, most of them Islamic dirhams carried the length of the world, and 486 arm-rings. Three caches, hidden under the boards in the 9th century and never reclaimed. The greatest hoard the Vikings left behind.
How it was found
- A metal-detector survey for a TV documentary swept a farmer's field on Gotland in 1999 and got a huge signal under an old barn floor: the largest Viking silver hoard ever found, about 67 kilos.
