The account

When Attila died in 453, the legend runs, his people dammed and diverted a river, buried him in three nested coffins, iron, silver, gold, with gems and the captured weapons of half of Europe, then let the water flow back over him. The slaves who dug the grave were killed to keep the place secret, and the secret held: fifteen hundred years on, no trace of the Scourge of God or his treasure has ever been found beneath the Hungarian plain.
