The account
Alaric sacked Rome and died within the year, and his men gave him a funeral no grave-robber could follow: a river for a tombstone. Sixteen centuries of dreamers, Himmler among them, have probed the Busento's bed. The river keeps rolling over whatever it knows.
Leads, where the trail points now
- Where the trail goes cold: Slaves diverted the Busento, buried the king and his hoard in the riverbed, returned the water, and were killed to seal the secret. That is where any serious search begins.
- What you are chasing is The plunder of Rome itself. Work the documented record of The Treasure of Alaric back to primary sources and separate what is attested from folklore before you commit time or money.
- Confirm who owns and governs Busento River, Cosenza, Italy and get written permission before any search; treat protected or archaeological ground as off limits.
