The account
Two Cornish miners scratching a worked-over field hit the largest nugget human beings have ever found, sitting just beneath a cart track thousands had rolled over. It bought them farms and a permanent place in every prospector's heart. The lesson is taped inside detector cases to this day: the ground is never finished.
How it was found
- Two miners, John Deason and Richard Oates, found the largest gold nugget in history just below the surface in the roots of a tree at Moliagul, Australia, in 1869. It was so big there were no scales to weigh it whole, so it was broken on an anvil.
