Treasure Hunter or Looter? Where the Line Is
People love the word treasure and flinch at the word looter, but the gap between them is narrow and it is worth naming. The tools are the same. The intent is everything.
The law and the landowner
A treasure hunter searches ground they are allowed to search and keeps what the law lets them keep. A looter takes from protected sites, from other people's land, from places the rules put off limits. The first builds a hobby and a community. The second ends careers and erases history.
What you do with what you find
Recording a find, reporting it where the law requires, and letting an expert see something important is what turns a lucky dig into real history. The richest treasure stories on earth, the hoards in the museums, exist because someone did this right. Pocketing and hiding a significant find is how knowledge gets lost forever.
Why we lead with it
Find Responsibly is not fine print on this site, it is the spine of it. We flag protected ground, we point you to the places you can legally dig, and we will always sit on the right side of that line. It is the only way the hobby survives.
