On Verifying a Source

A claim is only as good as what stands behind it.

Trace a story to its earliest source. A modern article repeating a legend is not evidence; the document, photograph, or record it rests on might be.

Note who said what, when, and how they would know. Mark speculation as speculation. This is the habit that separates a researcher from a rumor.
