The account
When Richmond fell, the Confederacy's treasury fled south by wagon train, gold and silver under armed guard, rolling through Georgia while the country collapsed around it. Near the Chennault plantation, in the dark, the wagons were raided; locals scooped coins from the mud for days afterward. What was never recovered has been argued over for a hundred and sixty years: spent, scattered, or buried in haste by men who did not live to dig it up.
