The account
Workmen mending the bank of the Ribble in 1840 broke a lead chest and silver poured out, coins, hacksilver, ingots, and Carolingian jewellery, more than eight thousand pieces, second in all the Viking world only to Spillings. Each man was let keep a single coin; the rest went to the Crown. Buried as the Vikings were driven from Dublin, perhaps a war-chest for a reconquest that never came.
