The account
A ploughman turned up dark metal in a Suffolk field in 1942 and, the story goes, kept the great dish on his wall for years thinking it pewter. It was Roman silver of the highest art, the Great Dish alone, rimmed with sea-gods and revellers, weighs over eight kilos. Thirty-four pieces, the finest Roman silver ever found in Britain, nearly lost to a farmer's modesty.
How it was found
- A ploughman turned up a hoard of late Roman silver in a Suffolk field during the war in 1942; it was kept quiet for years before being reported and declared treasure.
