The account
In 1861 gold turned up in the beach sand below the sea caves they call the Ovens, and a thousand miners swarmed the shore within the season. The rush passed into the Cunard family's hands and then into quiet, but the black sand still carries gold, and the park that keeps the headland rents pans by the hour for the same beach the rush worked.
